During
the past 20 years, we have seen an increased awareness about Islam
and Muslims living in the United States. From the Gulf War in 1991
to the tragic events of September 11th and subsequent wars in Afghanistan
and Iraq, the image of Islam and Muslims, which is often associated
with these events by the media, is often not representative of the
true nature of Islam or its practitioners. In order to provide a
more balanced perspective, ING has spent over 15 years providing
onsite educational presentations and online resources about Islam
and Muslims. Our goal is to eliminate stereotypes, dispel myths,
and increase religious literacy while fostering mutual respect among
people of all faiths and none.
ING Accomplishments
Since 1993, ING’s educational outreach efforts have had a positive
impact and influence. Our accomplishments are evidenced locally
in the San Francisco Bay Area, home to one of the largest Muslim
communities in the nation, and nationally, as our successful Islamic
Speaker Bureau program is modeled by over a dozen affiliates
throughout the country.
To learn more about the work of ING, please review a timeline of our
major events and achievements over the past 15 years. You will find
statistics on classroom presentations in schools, colleges and universities,
as well as training workshops at law enforcement agencies, corporations,
health care facilities, civic centers, faith-based groups and other
organizations.
